Born in China in 1965, Chai Yiming currently lives and works in Shanghai. He graduated from the design department of Shanghai Commercial Academy in 1987 and is dedicated to evolving an innovative, contemporary style if ink brush painting. Working with subjects that are caught in a moment of movement or change, Yiming creates work that examines the poetics of memory and the way that people, places and objects can be left behind in the wake of development. Mythical and hybrid creatures that fuse plants, animals and people are also often a motif in Yiming’s images, used to construct an idealistic world which draws on the values of Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism.
Yiming’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions such as The Ink at Walsh Gallery, Chicago, 2001; Traditional Elements and Expressions of Today – Contemporary Chinese Ink Art at Sunbow Art Gallery, Shanghai, 2008 and Square at Eastlink Gallery, Shanghai 2008. Yiming is represented by Around Space Gallery in Shanghai.
