Li Ming Zhu was born in Tianjin, China, in 1973. He graduated from the China Academy of Fine Arts Oil Painting Department in 1996. He looks particularly at the disconnect between traditional Chinese ideals and cultural practices, and the present day. He asks, how was this distance created, and how are these ideas processed today? His ceramic series borrows from the Ming dynasty Cloisonné tradition of production, with painstaking attention to detail. He refigures production through the quotidian fixtures of modern Chinese life – purified water dispensers, closed circuit camera devices, and kitchen items reconfigured.
Li Mingzhu has exhibited extensively in Europe, as well at the National Gallery of China in Beijing, where he currently lives and works. He is represented by Front Line Contemporary, Shanghai.
